Canva’s AI image generator app (powered by Stable Diffusion) is a powerful tool that generates professional designs using AI technology, saving designers time without manual editing or design software. With Magic Media’s text to image app, all you have to do is give it a text prompt, and the app will generate the perfect image, illustration, and graphic elements based on the prompts.

It’s also perfect for design inspiration and exploring new ideas. And it doesn’t stop at image generation; you can also generate a few seconds of AI video!

All you have to do is give it a descriptive text prompt (the more descriptive, the better for the best results). Select a style (Canva has 18 on the free plan) and an aspect ratio (square, landscape, or portrait). Hit generate and watch the magic unfold!

This is my all-time favorite AI art generator because it’s completely free and integrated within Canva, which many people already use for their design projects. Here is how I generated an AI image using Canva’s AI image generator.

How to Use Canva’s AI Image Generator

To get started, I went to Canva’s Free Online AI Image Generator and selected “Generate AI Images.”

I was sent to the “Magic Media” app. In the middle of the page was my canvas, and to the left of that was where I could place text and generate an image!

If you don’t know what to generate as I did, you can select “Try an example” and “Create your image.”

Within seconds, Canva generated four images of “Lab with computers and servers, isometric style.”

There were lots of variations I could choose from, and I was impressed with the quality of the results! Without a doubt, this is a massive time-saver for designers who don’t want to spend hours finding photos or creating images from scratch for their design projects.

Who owns the copyright of AI images produced by AI image generation apps remains an open question, and there is no easy answer! For now, if you’re curious about who owns the image under copyright law, Canva does not make any copyright claim. You own the images you create and give Canva the rights to host them and use them for marketing.

Please be aware that if you plan to use these images for commercial projects, you may not have exclusive rights to them.

How to Use Magic Design

On Canva’s Magic Studio page, I scrolled down to the Magic Design section and selected “Try Magic Design.”

This took me to the Magic Studio, where I could describe my desired design. I went with one of the suggestions, “Spring cherry blossom festival post pink,” but you can type whatever type of design you want into the empty field.

The results were terrific! Like, look at these. These are a great starting point for creating great-looking designs with excellent typography, layout, and colors.

Within seconds, it generated hundreds of thousands of templates revolving around my description. With a single click, I could select the one I liked the most and start customizing the content directly in Canva. I could also filter these based on social media, video, marketing, etc., and upload my media to replace the images used in the templates.

Think about how long it would take to use complicated design software like Photoshop or Illustrator. It could take hours, and by the end, you would only have one design.

3. Magic Switch (Pro Only)

Magic Switch allows you to switch your design format, languages, and dimensions instantly. This means you can effortlessly convert your presentations to various documents, instantly restructure your design for multiple platforms, or automatically translate them.

Note that this is a Pro feature, so you must be a Canva Pro user to access it! Canva offers a Free 30-day trial to try it out.

How to Use Magic Switch

To start using Magic Switch, I went to Canva’s Magic Studio page and selected “Try Magic Switch.” This opened a new project in Canva (ensure you are on the Pro plan to be able to use Magic Switch! There’s a 30-day free trial).

On the top left, I saw “Magic Switch,” which I clicked on. In the menu that opened, I selected “Translate.”

In the following menu, I could select the language (there are over 100!) I wanted to translate the text and how many pages of my design.

Within a few seconds, my design had been translated from English to Korean!

Next, I wanted to see how Magic Switch would transform my design into a document. I went to “Magic Switch” on the top left, but this time I selected “Transform into Doc.”

Here, I could transform my design into a summary, all text, blog post, email, poem, or song lyrics. I wanted to have fun with this and see what Canva would come up with, so I selected “Poem.”

In seconds, my design was transformed into a poem! Not bad.

Lastly, you can instantly change the format by selecting one of the sizes under “Resize.” I went with the classic “Instagram Post,” and here’s how it turned out!

Translating design copy and switching up the formatting using Magic Switch on Canva couldn’t be easier! It’s an excellent way to make your designs more versatile and accessible across different platforms and languages.

4. Magic Morph

Magic Morph is arguably my favorite Canva AI tool because it’s fun and experimental! This is an excellent tool to make your bland graphics pop. Select any element from your design and give it a 3-dimensional look and texture, like balloons, pumpkins, or wood.

To give you a better idea, here’s how I used it to give my graphics an extra dimension.

How to Use Magic Morph

On Canva’s Magic Studio page, I selected “Try Magic Morph.” This opened a new Canva project where I could try Magic Morph.

I selected the white star and described the look I was going for (“milky lime matte balloon”) and hit “Magic Morph.

Canva will generate four variations at a time. If you’re not happy with them, you can always regenerate.

I started by going to Canva’s Magic Studio page and selecting “Try Magic Expand.”

From there, I double-clicked on the image, selected “Expand,” decided on the size I wanted, and hit “Magic Expand” when I was ready. I went with the “Whole Page” size to see how it would come out.

Canva generated four variations. Here is the best result!

Despite having a square orientation previously, the leaves look believable. Canva’s Magic Expand is a great way to expand photos that have an unconventional aspect ratio or need to be resized without losing any important details.
